Look closely. Do you see the chuckwalla at the left
edge of the
crack in the rock?
This is a real example
of protective coloration.
Unlike most lizards, chuckwallas are herbivores. Their favorite food is
yellow flowers. Fortunately the desert has lots of yellow flowers.

Another protective adaptation they have is to wedge themselves
into rock crevices and puff up their body for a tight fit. A predator will not be able to
pull them out of their rock.
