 Look closely. Do you see the chuckwalla at the left edge of the
crack in the rock?
This is a real example
of protective coloration.
 
Unlike most lizards, chuckwallas are herbivores. Their favorite food is yellow flowers. Fortunately the desert has lots of yellow flowers.

 

 Close-up view of "chuck."  Another protective adaptation they have is to wedge themselves into rock crevices and puff up their body for a tight fit. A predator will not be able to pull them out of their rock.
